Bare Feet and Vegas…Not a Good Match

On a typical summer day in Vegas the ground temperatures can skyrocket. It’s easy to forget how hot the ground can get. Sometimes even a hot Spring or Fall day can heat up the ground to temperatures that can burn bare feet.

Here is an example of the different temperatures of turf, pavers and turf in the shade all taken at the exact same time on a summer day.

Children should wear shoes to the edge of the pool, sit down, take off their shoes and leave them on the side of the pool where they can put them back on as soon as they are finished lessons. Or parents can take their shoes to the shade and meet their child at the edge of the pool when lessons are over so no child is walking around in bare feet.

It’s always best to check the ground with your bare hand before letting children walk around anywhere barefooted.

A good rule to teach your children as early as possible is that it’s coolest in the shade so that should be option one.

If walking barefoot in the sun, step on the lightest colored ground possible. For example, white pavers are significantly cooler than green turf.

I require all students to wear shoes when not in the pool to avoid injuries.
