<image:caption>Many parents prefer Boogie Wipes or Baby Wipes over tissues because they are already wet and won’t fall apart in your child’s wet hands. So do I! NOT WET WIPES! The main difference between baby wipes and wet wipes is their intended use. Baby wipes are specially formulated to be gentle enough for cleaning a baby’s skin.</image:caption>

<image:title>Swimming Info - Your Child's Travel Bag Contents for Swimming Lessons - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Tissues in a WINDPROOF Tissue Box: I cannot say it enough…BRING TISSUES! Nearly every student needs tissues EVERY SINGLE CLASS! If you don’t have them in your bag then class is stopped and we wait. That’s wasted class time. It may seem like too much to get this tissue box, but boxes of tissues get smashed in pool bags. Plus, the wind blows them into the pool. When that happens class stops and I have to fish tissues out of the pool before I can continue with the lesson. It’s cheaper to buy a windproof tissue box. This inexpensive tissue box holder keeps your tissues clean and wind resistant. It’s easy to refill. It looks stylish, is water resistant and has a convenient carrying handle. You can keep it in your car during the off season for year round use. That’s what I do! You probably think your child doesn’t need tissues. You are wrong. EVERY SINGLE STUDENT I’VE EVER HAD needs tissues. Also note: due to COVID-19, I will not blow your child’s nose. If your child needs to blow their nose and needs help with this I will call you to help them and then apply hand sanitizer to their hands. It may seem extreme, but it has kept me healthy these past few years. Thank you for understanding.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Following the recent Coronavirus pandemic hand sanitizer is a requirement for all students to bring to class and to use before class and after blowing their nose. This required item has helped keep me super healthy for the past several seasons. I don’t want to get sick and miss classes! Since implementing the hand sanitizer requirement I have been healthier than ever! So yes, this is a requirement.</image:caption>

<image:caption>These are required for any student who is not potty trained for at least 6 months. Shown here is the Splash About Happy Nappy Swim Diaper found on Amazon. You’ll notice the super thick elastic around the waist and legs to keep contaminants in if they have an accident. These must fit snug around the waist and legs. If they are gapping and loose then they are not doing the job for which the pants are intended and are useless. Not only must your child be wearing these but they must FIT PROPERLY so as to be effective. If they are gapping and loose they are not effective and therefore the same as not wearing any. These are in ADDITION TO SWIM diapers which go under these. BOTH are required for entrance into the pool.</image:caption>

<image:title>Swimming Info - Your Child's Travel Bag Contents for Swimming Lessons - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>I keep my pool at a reasonably warm temperature all season long. For most kids it’s fine. Some kids are cold even if it’s 120° air temperature and 90° water temperature. For those kids I recommend getting a wet suit. It’s like a coat you can wear in the pool. It can warm up your child by 10° if fitted properly and a thick enough gage. See my blog post on how to buy a wet suit. Here is a link to one that some of my students wear. Wet suits are like sponges. They are FULL of water. Once out of the pool they will freeze your child if you leave the wet suit on and wrap them in a towel or bathrobe. Take the wet wet suit off at a minimum before putting the towel or bathrobe on them to go home. It will be way more comfortable for them. They should be wearing a bathing suit under their wet suit.</image:caption>

<image:title>Swimming Info - Your Child's Travel Bag Contents for Swimming Lessons - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>We live in the desert. Hydrating is super important. Sometimes the littlest students will drink the pool water when they are thirsty. YUCK! Plus, it teaches your kids to always hydrate when working out. I have a filtered water fountain in the sunroom and ice from the freezer dispenser you can use to fill up the bottle if needed. Please put your name on the bottle. Kids forget their bottles all the time. I put them in my, “Forgotten, but not Lost” bin for you to pick up at your next lesson.</image:caption>

<image:title>Swimming Info - Your Child's Travel Bag Contents for Swimming Lessons - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>All students need to bring fins to all classes. Please only purchase styles like the Churchill fins (for older kids with larger feet) like shown above or Finis-like for smaller kids with small feet. I am very specific on the types of fins used in class because there are a lot of poorly designed fins out there that will be nothing but trouble in class. You don’t HAVE to buy Finis fins. Amazon has a ton of very colorful fins that are short silicon that work just as well. Finis and Churchill are quality brands and as long as the fins fit your child’s feet we shouldn’t waste any time fooling around with them. Check out my buying guide for purchasing fins for class.</image:caption>

<image:title>Swimming Info - Your Child's Travel Bag Contents for Swimming Lessons - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Goggles are NOT REQUIRED as long as your child swims with their eyes open UNDERWATER. This is non-negotiable. If they close their eyes underwater they must put on goggles. You can find theses on Amazon. This is a 2-pack for only around $12 and has several color combination options. These goggles work better than most other styles/designs for most of my students. See my goggles blog post for more details. This is Logan, 4-years-old. He screamed and fought me about going under water until I put these goggles on him. Now look at him. He LOVES diving for toys. I call these my “Magic Goggles”! They work for 99% of my students. Please do NOT purchase the variations where the lenses are opaque. For swimming lessons I need to be able to see my students eyes. I need to know if they are paying attention, confused, bored, scared, etc. If I can’t see their eyes I won’t know what they are thinking or feeling. If your child really wants those versions that’s fine, just use them for play time in the pool, not lessons.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Kids, sun and pool water are all extremely destructive to goggles. Protect your goggles with cases. Otherwise you’ll be buying new goggles every month. These are worth the investment. If your child’s goggles are scratched up you’ll need to buy them new goggles that work. Students MUST be able to see where they are swimming underwater. They can’t do that if their goggles are scratched up.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is DIFFERENT than a wet suit. UV Shirts / Rash Guards are SPF 50+ and are great for making sure your child does not get burned. I wear one every day in the pool and I never burn under it. They do NOT keep your child warm! It's more effective and faster than applying sunscreen to the arms and torso. This is excellent protection from the sun. Use LESS sunscreen and give your child better protection from the sun’s harmful rays. These shirts do not last forever. If they start getting baggy then they need to be thrown away. The SPF protection is gone and your child will start burning through the shirt. Please see my blog post on the care instructions for swim suits and SPF shirts in the Swimming News section. UV shirts can be very cold to wear outside of the pool. I take mine off immediate upon exiting the pool because they are freezing. If possible take it off your child’s UV shirt before putting their towel or bathrobe on. They will be so much warmer and dryer without it outside of the pool.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Wrangling excited kids and their swimming bag can be a lot. I see a lot of kids running to the car forgetting their shoes in their excitement. Water shoes are helpful because they can go from the deck to the pool. I usually will have students take the shoes off during lessons because they weigh down the feet and interfere with learning. But they are really helpful overall to walk over to the pool, put their feet in the pool and THEN take the water shoes off, unlike flip flops or other shoes that need to be taken off before entering the pool. That increases the potential for a child to burn their feet or leave their shoes somewhere they could forget them. You can put the water shoes on before you leave the house and that’s one less thing to worry about. I highly recommend students water shoes at public pools, splash pads, water parks and beaches. There are so many things there that a child can step on and cut their foot or sting them. No one wants tears at those places. Always rinse with fresh water after using and leave out to air dry.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Aqua Disks, AKA “Happy Faces!” Kids love these and so do I. I use them to teach a lot of skills. The multiple holes allow for several different grips. Availability for these constantly changes as does the price. Average price is $25. Green is small, so get green for kids. Orange is large, so only get orange for adults. Orange is too big for kids. The student in the blog picture is using green Aqua Disks. I’ve found them on Amazon and TheLifeguardStore.com</image:caption>

<image:caption>Synergy Hand Paddles for Swim Training. Hand paddles provide resistance which will slow down the arms and require a perfect technique to get them to work properly. They are a struggle to use if technique is poor, thus an ideal tool to motivate swimmer to improve their technique. Order small for kids and medium for adults. Large are just for professional athletes. Several colors to choose from. $17 average price. These provide resistance which increases strength and improves form.</image:caption>

<image:caption>These Finis hand paddles are another excellent option. I love these because they can be worn on either hand, which results in different muscles being worked. You want small or medium for kids depending on their hand size and skill level. If you are not sure start off with small and then they can graduate to large. Medium size is shown here. They have a simple dot code: 1 dot = small, 2 dots = medium, 3 dots = large.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Poolmaster 50509 Advanced Kickboard Swim Trainer and Swim Aid, Small There are hundreds of kickboard options out there, but for anyone learning how to swim this is one of the best designs. It has two sets of handles which helps as the swimmer graduates from beginner to intermediate to advanced. This is so durable it will last generations for only $15. It may not have trendy character on it, but it also won’t break after a week like the Styrofoam ones in the big box stores. Order SMALL for kids.</image:caption>

<image:caption>These are Churchill fins. I LOVE my Churchill fins. I recommend them for anyone with larger feet. For kids with smaller feet Finis makes fins like these in those sizes. You want soft rubber/silicone fins, not hard plastic. Hard plastic will cause discomfort, blisters and cuts. That is NOT FUN!</image:caption>

<image:caption>We have to start with Malibu C: Swimmers Wellness Shampoo and Conditioner. I have been swimming in chlorinated pools my entire life. Since I’m a blond my hair becomes saturated with pool chemicals. This turns my hair crunchy. It feels like straw and is impossible to comb or brush. It breaks. It’s miserable. I’ve tried everything and the only thing that works is Malibu C. It removes all the pool chemicals and returns my hair to NORMAL! Fortunately now I don’t swim in chlorine pools. My pool is a salt water pool so between that and Malibu C my hair is super silky soft in the summer and finally healthy and growing long again. The only places I’ve found it is Amazon, Walmart Online and Sally’s Beauty Supply Store.</image:caption>

<image:title>Swimming Info - A few of my FAVORITE things! - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve spent so many years toiling away in an office that my skin hasn’t had much skin exposure as an adult. Why change that now?! I quickly learned that nothing beats a cute UV sun shirt. Notice the thumb holes! I specifically get ones that cover my hands. You don’t want to pre-age your hands by not protecting them. I use sunscreen AND cover my hands. I’ve been burned plenty of times using sunscreen. I’ve never been burned wearing a UV shirt. Keep in mind that they do not last forever. Once they start stretching out they lose their UV effectiveness and need to be tossed. I have a stack in every color so I’m always ready to grab a fresh new one when needed. You can also get these with a hoodie for extra head and ear protection.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I love wearing baseball caps, but some times they just aren’t enough. You need to cover those ears, neck and lower face and give your eyes a rest. This Sun Shade hat is excellent. It really reduces the sun’s glare in my eyes. I can pull my hair up into a pony tail and keep it dry a little longer. The wide brim all around gives my whole face extra sun protection and even covers my ears and neck. The adjustable cord has saved the hat from blowing away in the Vegas winds more times than I can count. I hate taking off the baseball cap but it’s worth the trade.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I love fins because when I’m working out and swimming laps my arms do most of the work. Fins are a great way to engage your legs more. You can use them in so many ways to create resistance without swimming laps so you get get a great, fun workout without swimming laps by just putting on a pair of fins. Oh and boy do they make you swim fast and there is NOTHING better than swimming fast. It’s why we swim! I feel the need…the need for SPEED!</image:caption>

<image:caption>These AqtivAqua goggles are the best I’ve ever used. I love the large frame. It spreads out the pressure so it doesn’t start to hurt the eye socket no matter how long you wear them. The larger lens gives you a wider field of vision. And they come with the beautiful hard case, shown above, to protect your investment.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Want to workout but don’t know what to swim? This book is perfect. The Waterproof Coach. First of all IT’S WATERPROOF!! ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. Inside you can mix and match your warm up, workout and cool downs. Since the book is waterproof you don’t have to memorize your workout. You just leave it at the end of your lane to refresh your memory during your rests. It keeps swimming laps from getting boring. It has a one - three goggle code to indicate the difficulty of each workout so you can pick how hard you want to workout each day or pick an easy workout for a rest day. I’ve had this book for 20 years and I still use it and it’s still in great shape.</image:caption>

<image:title>Swimming Info - A few of my FAVORITE things! - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>These are Poolmaster Swimming Pool Underwater Surf Boards. No, they don’t allow you to “surf in a pool”. They are balance boards for a pool…in the shape of a surf board. These kids are actually too small to use them properly. The way you use them is you stand on them like a surfer with your knees bent and you practice balancing on them. It sounds easier than it really it. I up the difficulty level by turning on the Fastlane Pro in my pool. That makes it nearly impossible to stand up on for very long, but it makes for a super fun work out. This is a GREAT CORE work out and will work out every little muscle you have. You’ll use muscles you didn’t know existed to stay on this board!</image:caption>

<image:caption>FINIS Iso Swim Training Paddle, Black Gold. These are new that I just added to my bin of toys recently. I love these so much because they are so ergonomic and comfortable. I love increasing the resistance when I swim to get a harder workout and build up muscle. What’s super cool about these is that if you switch the hands they work different muscles! So you can double the workout effectiveness just by switching the hands they are on. Brilliant. They come in 3 sizes. Kids can wear either the small or medium depending on their hand size, skill level and amount of resistance they want in their workout. There is an adult size too. I will wear any of the three sizes depending on how much resistance I want in the workout, but my favorite size is medium.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If you REALLY want to work those arms you need a PULL BOUY! Put one of these between your thighs to keep your legs bouyant, but not kicking and your arms will have to do all the work. Then combine them with a set of paddles and you’ll really work those arms. This is my favorite lap workout. You can really feel your arms working and you can feel it when you catch the water with a perfect pull.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A Kickboard WITH HANDLES! There are THOUSANDS of kickboards out there. This one is one of my favorites. Poolmaster 50509 Advanced Kickboard Swim Trainer and Swim Aid, Small. I like it because it is inexpensive, but well made and has lots of handles so you can use it for lots of different workout drills. Kickboards without handles reduce your ability to get a good grip and you’ll end up not using it much. Two sets of handles like this is ideal.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Swimming is a great cardio workout. I use paddles and fins for some strength training, but I want to incorporate some more strength training and I want to work on increasing my breath control this summer so I got a set of water weights. You can fill them with water, but I fill them with sand because sand is heavier than water. I’m curious to see how long they hold up in this desert environment. Like with all my equipment I will keep them out of the sun and pool when not in use. I’m looking forward to having some fun with these this summer.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Kristin</image:title>
<image:caption>Kristin - community pool pass ID at age 4. I have been swimming since I was a baby. I literally cannot remember ever not being able to swim. I joined my first swim team when I was 6-years-old and swam competitively through college. I was born, raised and trained in Maryland, home of Michael Phelps and also the state with the most Olympic Medals for swimming. There must be something in the water! I don't think there is a more competitive state in the union for swimming than Maryland. The competition as a kid was brutal. I know how to swim CORRECTLY and that's how I teach my students to swim!</image:caption>

<image:title>About Kristin</image:title>
<image:caption>Kristin - University of Notre Dame of Maryland Swim Team. In college competitions I swam the following events: 100 & 200 meter butterfly, 100 & 200 meter individual medley, butterfly leg on the 400 meter medley relay, and the 1650 meter freestyle (which is 1 mile). These are the hardest events to swim. In college I completed the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course and began my swimming instructor/coaching career. I spent my college summers as a lifeguard, and continued to lifeguard and teach swimming lessons nights and weekends for several years after graduating. After college I coached a summer swim team of approximately 50 kids ages 6 - 18 for several years. Sure, you can have some kid teach your kid how not to drown, but if you want your kid to learn how to be a STRONG swimmer and learn how to swim CORRECTLY from day one, then you want me to teach your child how to swim. I don't waste time teaching your child how to swim wrong just to "get them across the pool without drowning".</image:caption>

<image:title>About Kristin</image:title>
<image:caption>Mermaid Time! If I can't be Wonder Woman, maybe I could be a mermaid. I've taught stroke clinics for competitive swimmers looking to improve their stroke technique for faster competitive times. You can't be a mermaid unless you are a SERIOUSLY STRONG SWIMMER! I have been teaching swimming lessons since I was 21-years-old, and have a total of 20+ cumulative years of water safety instructor experience, teaching every age, every ability and every comfort level with water. I've taught group lessons for several years, but I've found that private individual classes are much more effective and efficient. I've even taught kids how to be mermaids!</image:caption>

<image:caption>I am a certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. I have Heartsaver First Aid & CPR AED certification from the American Heart Association. I moved to Vegas from Maryland in 2010 and love it here. I want my students to have fun in class and in the pool, but it's ALWAYS SAFETY FIRST with me at my pool, even if that means the fun needs to stop for a while.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Last day of class with a student. I've taught thousands of students over the years. I miss my students every winter and love having pictures like this.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Kristin</image:title>
<image:caption>In class photo with a two-year-old student working on parent separation anxiety issues. I get to know each and every one of my students and I customize lessons to their unique personality, learning style, and love/fear of the water. I work with their guardians to constantly tweak my teaching style as needed to get the best results out of my students every single class. This student cried and fought me for 7 classes. On the 8th class she was excited and ready to learn. She showed Momma all she actually learned during those 7 classes of crying and fighting. She LOVES swimming lessons now. I have the patience for any student.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Kristin</image:title>
<image:caption>This student screamed at me and kicked me on day one. I kicked him out of the pool for breaking the no kicking rule. He was just scared and trying to assert his dominance over me. His grandmother cried thinking he'd never learn how to swim. His mother kept bringing him back. Every class we made progress. Very slow progress. It was a FIGHT to get him to put goggles on his face. Eventually I got him to put his face in using goggles. By the end of the summer I had him jumping in off the side of the pool into the deep end, swimming across the pool with his face in the water. His favorite thing was diving to the bottom of the pool for toys. On his last day he gave me a long hug good bye. They were moving out of state. His grandmother cried again with happiness because her grandson could swim. I have the patience and perseverance to get any kid swimming as long as the parents have as much patience and perseverance as me. I love all my students and I love this one so much and will miss him. He absolutely LOVED swimming lessons once he let go of his fear and started trusting me.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Kristin</image:title>
<image:caption>Sometimes new parents read through my attendance policy, rules and behavior expectations and think it's a bit much or too strict. Any of my current or former students and parents will tell you it's not. It's all reasonable. I just wrote it all down for new parents who are not familiar with swimming and swimming lessons so that they and their children can be as prepared as possible for fun productive swimming lessons. "Safety First" around swimming pools is always the number one rule, followed by everyone respecting each other. Then the fun can follow naturally. And as you can see we have fun. I WANT my students to have fun in class. I want to have fun in class. The more fun we have the more and faster my students will learn, which is the ultimate goal. These are kids and we are in a swimming pool. Lessons shouldn't be all boring. Lessons will be HARD. Learning IS hard. But it doesn't have to be boring. I want my students to learn how to swim and learn to LOVE SWIMMING! You'll find I'm actually a very easy going, chill person. How can I not be?! I'm a swimming instructor!</image:caption>

<image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>Some sort of tissues are required for all students. You have a choice between some sort of baby wipes or tissues. I HIGHLY PREFER moist wipes. There are so many wipe options out there to choose from: Boogie Wipes, Dude Wipes, Flushable Wipes (Charmin, Cottenelle, etc.) Water Wipes, etc. Parents are STILL NOT BRINGING TISSUES AND HAND SANITIZER to lessons. Even if your child does not have a runny or stuffy nose, their nose will start running once we start swimming. This is a sanitary/HEALTH issue and your child DOES need tissues! I really appreciate the parents who do bring tissues. If you don't put the dry tissues in a plastic box the wind will blow them into the pool, which means class stops while I fish them out of the pool. So a handy little carrying case is a huge help. (Click on the image above for a link to Amazon for a dry tissue travel box.) Plus they work great in the car in between lessons! Baby wipes are better than tissues because they don't disintegrate in wet hands or the pool!</image:caption>

<image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>THANK YOU to all my 2024 parents for respecting my request and applying sunscreen at home. Because you followed this rule I was able to keep my pool cleaner using less chemicals to do so. That saves money that I have to spend on the rising gas prices to heat the pools so our kiddos are mostly not cold during class. (Can't heat the pool to 100 degrees like most students want me too. LOL) Please continue to remember to apply sunscreen NO LESS THAN 15 MINUTES before your child gets into the pool. It helps keep my pool water clean and protects your child from the sun instead of washing off them exposing them to harmful rays. Also, please try not to overdo the sunscreen. Too much is overkill. We don't want them so greased up that they slip out of my hands when I grab them to keep them from slipping under the water. :) The sunscreen should absorb into the skin, not just sit on top of it.</image:caption>

<image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>I am an OFFICIAL member of the "Ministry Of Silly Walks". What this means is that kids AND adults are encouraged to do SILLY WALKS down the alley to class. Why? Many of my students are nervous, stressed, anxious, etc. This helps them shake off some of those mental and emotional stressors and get them into a happy, fun, silly mood for class. The kids that do it love it and have so much fun. I know it's silly...but that's the whole point! When parents do it its even MORE FUN! Kids love seeing their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles being silly. It gets everyone into an excellent mood for swimming lessons. Don't believe me? Try it and see! I love when kids show me their new silly walks. So much fun! (If you are not familiar with Money Python's infamous sketch about the Ministry of Silly Walks click on the image above to go directly to a YouTube video of the sketch. Share with your kids so they understand the origins of "Silly Walking." There are lots of Ministry of Silly Walks videos on YouTube. Enjoy!)</image:caption>

<image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>Boogie Wipes or some other brand of wipes are required for swimming lessons. This is not a new requirement, but I'm still finding too many parents are not including anything for their child to use to blow their nose in their swim bags. I don't have any allergies but we are swimming outside and the wind makes your nose run no matter who you are. I go through a lot of tissues myself. Every single student I've ever had has needed to blow their nose during one or more swimming lessons. Please remember to keep your child's swim bag stocked with wipes or tissues in a wind-proof box. Thank you!</image:caption>

<image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>"Splash About Happy Nappy Swim Diapers" are the REQUIRED cover up OVER swim diapers. Students who are not potty trained for at least 6 months MUST wear these over swimming diapers in order to be let into the pool for swimming lessons from now on. There are a ton of colors and cute patterns to chose from. This is not new, but it is critical so I'm repeating it.</image:caption>

<image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>I have created a Student Information form on SurveyMonkey. This form provides me with important information to help me be as ready as possible for your child's lessons. The form takes 5+ minutes depending on how much information you provide. I set it up to be easy to mostly check boxes, but also comment boxes for you to have the opportunity to give me as much information as needed for each questions. I teach so many students each year that it's impossible to remember every detail. This form allows me to remember better and reference during lessons via my phone or iPad. I started this mid-season last year and it has helped tremendously. It's especially helpful for students who are hitting brick walls. The answers parents provide via this form has many times held the answers for how I need to proceed to help each student learn to their fullest potential with minimal stress and frustration. Since children change so much every year, returning parents, please fill out the link for Returning Students, only if you already filled it out for 2023. If you have never filled this form out please fill out the New Student form (click on the image above to go directly to that form). Links available in your Welcome Email. Note that you have to fill out the form for each child individually as each student is different. Thank you.</image:caption>

<image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>Oh No! Where is the water?!?! Anyone who has been a student of mine knows that I am fastidious when it comes to keeping my pool water as clean as possible. To that end, every other winter I completely drain the pool and fill it with fresh water. This makes it easier to keep the pool water balanced and clean for the next two seasons. The pool is filled again with fresh, clean water and looks amazing. I can't wait for the weather to warm up so I can swim in it!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Intermediate and Advanced students will be assigned stretches to do before class. These stretches have a proven track record of improving students ability to learn proper stroke technique FASTER and execute swimming skills more accurately. Stretches can be performed at home right before leaving for class or arrive early and do them before class starts. Stretching before any exercise is a good habit for children to get in to now while they are young. Click on the photo for a link to the stretches.</image:caption>

<image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>Fins are required for ALL STUDENTS. Yes, even 2-year-olds! Even swim team swimmers. Every year I get parents asking me if their child really need fins. Yes, they do. Maybe not for the first class and not every class, but they will need to bring them to every class just in case we need to use them that day. Fins are a tool used to teach students how to swim correctly. They are used to help strengthen muscles and build confidence. They will not be using fins all the time. Just when the lesson dictates the need for them. Please see my post all about purchasing fins in the Swimming News section (or click the image above to go to that link directly). It will help you figure out what to purchase for your child/ren. Fins are an excellent investment in your child's lessons and physical health. Fins will become their favorite swimming accessory.</image:caption>

<image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>Sometimes I use my cell phone to take pictures and videos of classes for a variety of reasons. My students are always asking me to send those videos and pictures to their parents. The best way to send them is via AirDrop. If you are not familiar with AirDrop it is a much better way for sharing files using cell phones. It also doesn't use up my phone memory like attaching video files via texting. In order to use AirDrop you need an iPhone, or the AirDrop app if you don't have an iPhone. You also need to have wifi and bluetooth turned on. There is free guest wifi access for all families to use during lessons. By signing into the guest wifi we will have an easier time sharing files via AirDrop.</image:caption>

<image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>I usually have music playing during classes. I have found that sometimes when a little student is having a hard day, or are really nervous or scared, playing their favorite songs can completely turn things around and make them happy. I always prefer happy students and will do almost anything to make them happy. When they are happy they are open to learning and pushing their fear boundaries, which were completely closed previously.. To that end, if you have a Spotify playlist for your child, please share the link to that playlist with me. That is the fastest way for me to get exactly the music your child loves the most. I'm also open to your child requesting specific songs or artists during class. I enjoy any genre as long as its good music. "I don't sing because I'm happy. I sing to become happy." Music is like medicine for the soul. It can turn your child's frown upside down and help make class productive and successful.</image:caption>

<image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>ALL students get a bracelet with our mantra "I Can Do Hard Things". This is part of their swimming lesson uniform. They should wear it for every class. It helps change their "I Can't Do It" negative thoughts into positive motivation thoughts. The power of a positive mindset is one of the strongest factors in how fast students learn how to swim. They also love that the bracelets GLOW IN THE DARK!!! Super Cool!</image:caption>

<image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>Sometimes parents bring siblings who have to wait during lessons. In the cabinet shown in the picture above you will find a variety of books, toys, and games for all ages. Feel free to use anything in this cabinet during lessons. I also leaving crayons with coloring pages and blank white paper for your children to use to be creative and express themselves while they wait. I love seeing their artwork when they are finished. Feel free to use any of these items to help entertain your children while you wait. I just ask that your kiddos neatly put away what they play with when they are finish so it's ready for the next family to use. Enjoy!</image:caption>

<image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>The "Treasure Box" is not new. I stock it with Pirate Booty: Gems, Pirate Coins, and other various trinkets that change from time to time. I like students leaving class happy and this is the "icing on the cake" of swimming lessons. They really work hard in class to earn the access to the treasure box at the end of class. This year parents AND STUDENTS have been donating toys that they no longer want or have outgrown in an effort to "pay it forward" for another student to enjoy. The students LOVE digging through the box after class to see what new treasure they will walk away with. ONLY students who have made an effort in class get to dig through the treasure box for a special trinket after class. (I have sent plenty of students home without a visit to the treasure box because they refused to learn. Either they just wanted to play in my pool, or wanted to do whatever they wanted and would not make any effort to learn any lessons.) I appreciate and encourage any parent wanting to clear out their house and any student wanting to learn the gift of giving to donate. Anything small is welcome! Things you might get in a birthday party gift bag, a vending machine or Christmas stocking stuffer are excellent for the Treasure Box. Ideas: Fun pencils, stickers, tattoos, balls, matchbox cars, figurines, squishy toys, mardi gras beads, fun rings, any random little toy.</image:caption>

<image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>TOYS, TOYS, TOYS! i have spent WAY too much money this winter on even MORE pool toys for my students. Using toys that your child loves is another way I try to make my students happy and excited for class and learning. I try to get all the popular, coolest toys. I have some toys that are now rare, and can't be purchased any longer. Unfortunately my spending has become a real problem. I'm spending all my money on toys for lessons. LOL. New students will be amazed at how many toys I have. Returning students will be excited to see the new choices with which to play.</image:caption>

<image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>SEASONAL GOAL: I have created a NEW REWARDS program! This is taking the Treasure Box and Diving Gems Awards to an even higher level. Students, Parents and I will set a tough, but achievable, customized goal for each student to work towards this season. If the student achieves their goal they will walk away with a GOLD MEDAL on their LAST day of class! I teach students from age 2 to 18 so there is no "one size fits all goal". Plus some students only have a few weeks to achieve their goal while other students have all season (7 months!) to earn their medal. If a student achieves their Gold Medal Goal before the end of their classes, we will set a NEW GOAL! The student will still get their Gold Medal on the last day for achieving their original goal, but we want them to keep being motivated with new goals. Let's see what the HIGHEST goal is they can achieve during lessons to earn that medal! Yes, we are moving the "goal posts", but they still get the goal when they score. I've heard so many stories about my students showing off their diving gems they earned for learning difficult skills in class. This will be an extra special award for them to show off to their friends, family members and strangers at dinner in the restaurant during their celebratory meal that night! LOL.</image:caption>

<image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>Here are the TWO types of progress boards now hung in the sunroom. I labeled the right board as the PROGRESS board. All students get a magnet with their name on it to put on this board to show where they currently are in the "Ocean". Beginner students start at the top and as they learn and master skills their magnet moves down deeper into the ocean. For school aged children please explain that this is not a "Behavioral Clip Board" like in school. Here, moving your magnet down is a POSITIVE thing. Some students get confused and upset by this misunderstanding. On the left is the NEW "8' CLUB" board. Students only get a magnet on this board if they touch the bottom of my 8' deep end. There are 4 ways to accomplish this goal. They can first get their magnet on the board with my help. Then they can move it down the more difficult levels as they become stronger, more confident swimmers. It's another fun goal to work towards and I've seen it bring out the inner self competitive nature hidden in some of my students.</image:caption>

<image:caption>At the end of the 2024 season I replaced my pool filter and pump with newer, better equipment. The "old" equipment was only 3 years old, but I just wasn't happy with their performance. In the one month this equipment ran, while teaching in October, I was over the moon with the noticeably improved performance. <image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>If you are not familiar with the "Anger Iceberg" please familiarize yourself with it. I just learned about it a year ago. Anger is a VERY complex emotion. It is actually caused by other emotions and usually several different emotions. There are a lot of different types of anger. I never thought of that until I discovered the Anger Iceberg. I deal with angry students sometimes and I have to determine what is causing the anger. It's usually fear, but not always. Sometimes it is frustration, confusion, exhaustion, worry, overwhelmed, distrust, embarrassment, grumpiness, sadness, annoyed, trauma, nervousness, or a COMBINATION of ANY of these emotions. Even grief can turn into anger during lessons. I learned a few of my students were angry because one or both of their parents had been gone away for several days and my student missed them so very, very much. For little kids this is very overwhelming and confusing and that can quickly turn to anger. So I do not get angry back. My first thought is to figure out why my student is angry and sometimes I may need your help to figure it out. So take some time to learn about the Anger Iceberg. I think you will find it will help you in all of your relationships in life. No one outgrows anger. Figuring out why someone is expressing anger can help prevent you from becoming angry back and you can help them calm down and solve their problem/s. <image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>Along the lines of the Anger Iceberg, I have found these Emotion Stress Balls to be a HUGE help for my students to process their overwhelming emotions in class at times. These are not pool toys, but I will use them in lessons to help students communicate feelings when they find it difficult to speak or don't want to speak and it's clear that their emotions are overwhelming them. These fun, colorful balls have helped break through and allowed us to start making fun progress again. I've included the Amazon link if you want to use these at home. Several of my students parents bought these for their kids last summer and said they have become lifesavers in tough situations. If your child has any sort of melt down in class please assure them that I am not mad or upset with them. Sometimes they get embarrassed. We all have bad days. Tomorrow is a new day and hopefully it will be a much better day. So no matter how bad a day a student of mine has I greet them with love, excitement and happiness next time I see them. Click on the photo to link to the item in Amazon. (I do not get paid for you purchasing anything from Amazon.)</image:caption>

<image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>STUDENT STORIES is a new page on my website where I feature students in the following categories: No goggles, using fins/flippers, and those who have joined my new 8' Club! I have many students scared of not wearing goggles. So I created a web page that posts just pictures of my students not wearing goggles. I sorted them by ages so no one thinks they are too young to be able to swim without goggles. In fact the students who tend to swim the most without goggles are my youngest ones. Please use this resource at home to help your child get use to the idea of being able to eventually open their eyes underwater without goggles. They are not required to swim without goggles, but I would like all my students to learn this skill. Remember...I have a SALT WATER POOL. So the water is more like the water already in your eyes. Yes, there is chlorine in the pool, but it's not as harsh as you will find in chlorine pools.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The 8' Club. This is a new club students can join this year. The 8' Club is for students who touch the bottom of the 8' deep end. There are 4 ways to accomplish this goal. 1. With help from Ms. Kristin. 2. Using the ladder. 3. Using fins/flippers. 4. No assistance and picking up a toy off the bottom. Students can level up over the weeks/months/years of lessons. I have dozens of 2-year-olds who can join the 8' Club with my help. It's exciting for them and motivates them to start trying to do it on their own.</image:caption>

<image:caption>DANCE PARTY! Did you know that dancing reduces stress and anxiety? Who loves to dance more than kids when a funky beat drops? Since learning to swim can be stressful and scary I will be having "Dance Party" days where I will play dance songs for my students to show me their best dance moves before hopping into the pool for lessons. The goal is to shake off their fears and anxiety to have a more productive and fun class. I will have some songs queued up, but I take requests! If there are any songs your child can't help but dance to let me know and I'll play it! LET'S DANCE!</image:caption>

<image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>HOMEWORK!!! This is absolutely NOT NEW, but I want to take the opportunity to let all parents know that if they want their child/ren to advance the fastest through the dozens of skills a child needs to learn AND MASTER to become a STRONG swimmer, then they are going to want to schedule pool time in between lessons. If you only come to lessons for your child to learn then it will take longer for your child/ren to progress. For parents who let me know they are going to be swimming in between lessons I will assign HOMEWORK. Pool time should primarily be PLAY TIME in the pool. Kids will naturally practice most of what they are learning, but kids forget, so I will give you no more than 3 things to remind them to do or for you to work with them on. It's ideal to only spend 5-15 minutes of their pool play time on homework. You decide on how much is appropriate. We don't want to make it another lesson. We want them to enjoy going to the pool for fun.</image:caption>

<image:title>What's New?</image:title>
<image:caption>OBSTACLE COURSES! One of my earliest memories is of my entire elementary school class coming to my house for field day. My mother had set up an obstacle course in the field next to the house. It was the most fun ever. So when one of my student suggested I make an obstacle course last year I thought it was a BRILLIANT idea. SEE...I listen to my students! Just because they are little doesn't mean they don't have the BEST ideas EVER! So at the end of last season I ran my first day of obstacle courses. The students loved it. I also involved their parents into the course which made it even more fun for my students. Many times parents ask me to make the last day of class super fun for their child/ren. I think this is a great way to have fun, at their individual levels, while showing off the skills they learned in class that month. I adjust the course to accommodate each student's ability and interests. It truly is a SUPER FUN day. I'm looking forward to a lot of obstacle course days at the end of each session this year. I hope each time I will get new ideas and my students will give me new ideas to change it up. I will have different obstacle courses depending on the weather. Sadly it won't have all these amazing inflatables like shown in this picture.</image:caption>
