Improving “Reaching and Scooping” skills

For some students this skill is a challenge to figure out.

For others improving their reach and/or strength of pulling is their challenge.

Here are some homework tips to help them outside of the pool.

  1. I use a rope in class. Feel free to get one yourself and play Tug-Of-War at home! It’s a lot of fun and will help build up those muscles.

  2. Have your child lay face down on the bed with their head facing the room and feet behind them on the bed. “Lasso” a stuffy and have them use their reaching and pulling arms to pull the stuffy to them. They can practice their flutter kicking at the same time if they need extra practice multitasking these skills.

  3. Take them to the playground and get them climbing as much as possible. Build up those arm muscles. Monkey Bars are ideal for helping with this skill. Some kids gyms have climbing walls. The Henderson Multigenerational Center has a climbing wall.
